Whether you’re still sheltering in place or working from home we have discovered that it’s the little things that make a difference in your day. Things like a simple cup of coffee!

If you’re a coffee fanatic like we are here are three fun tips to make your at-home drinks taste better than ever!

  • Invest in a milk frother. You can find some as inexpensive as $9 on Amazon. Warmed, frothed milk adds a sense of elevation to your coffee experience.
  • Get adventurous; Research local coffee roasters in your area! Support local businesses by buying your beans directly from them. Many places are offering delivery services during this time! Here are some of our favorite Atlanta area coffee roasters to shop from:
  • Make your own flavored syrup for super tasty drinks. Here is my go-to recipe. All you need is
    • 2 ½ cups of water
    • 2 cups of white sugar
    • ⅔ cup of brown syrup
    • 4 tablespoons of your favorite vanilla extract.
    •  Combine the sugars and water in a saucepan. Boil for at least 10 minutes. Let cool. When the mixtures has cooled, add the vanilla extract and stir well. Store in your favorite airtight bottle or glass container.

Happy Coffee Drinking!

Mother's Day is always a time of thoughtfulness and love. Whether you're a human mom, dog mom, step mom, whatever mom - we want to celebrate the stories we think of when we think 'Mom' :)

'My hero, my Mother'
Ben Mercer - eCommerce Admin

Everyday is like groundhog's day; wake up, commute to the computer, work, take a walk, run, eat, and repeat. I'm fortunate to have the routine and I still find time to whine. I know I shouldn't complain about quarantining or social distancing because so many do not have the privilege or luxury. Many wake up early, commute, and selflessly put themselves at risk to take care of others. My mother is one of those people and, no, she isn't a Doctor or a Nurse. She's been a cafeteria manager at a public elementary school for over 30 years and is considered essential. Since Covid-19 she's gone to work to prepare meals for all the kids on free and reduced lunch in her county. For a lot of children, this may be the majority of their meals for the week. She prepares and delivers those meals with not only a smile but with the same care and kindness she has shown me my entire life. I don't think she gets half the recognition or thanks she deserves. Still, she makes sure her kids are fed and that her families are okay. She definitely is
my hero.

'Make a Memory'

Michelle Der - CEO

She has a talent for making fun and adventure out of the ordinary.  I have such terrific memories with my 3 sisters dancing in our pj’s when she'd let us stay up late; of jumping in puddles with wild abandon; letting us empty the cabinets to play Supermarket and the shelves to play Library, and simply being silly.  We absolutely made lots of memories.

'My Mom'

Gavin Teichert - Operations Manager

My mom's one of the funniest people I've ever known and she's always had such a good sense of humor. My mom also used to love to clean the house. Very convenient for me in retrospect. So anyway, I remember one Saturday morning when I was a teenager she was in the kitchen mopping the floor like she did every Saturday morning. She'd been mopping for a few minutes when I heard a loud crash from the kitchen so I ran out of my bedroom to see what happened. I found my mom soaking wet flat on her back on the wet kitchen floor with a dazed look on her face. There was a pregnant pause for a few moments as I stood there looking at her and she laid there looking up at the ceiling. We both burst out laughing hysterically at the ridiculousness of it. I'm laughing right now just thinking about it! It was especially funny because my mom has a very infectious laugh when she gets going and she was laughing her ass off that morning. She was fine thankfully and we continued to laugh as I helped her up from the floor. It's one of my favorite memories of my mom and it's something she and I still laugh about together from time to time to this day.

'My Mom'

Veronica Pennix - Graphic Design

When I was younger, my family and I lived in Guam. My mom had severe headaches that seemed to have gotten worse so she went to the doctor to diagnose. The doctor ended up finding a large brain tumor and said they would need to fly her out to Hawaii as soon as possible for a craniotomy. My mother and father left me to stay with my neighbors for 28 days which felt like an eternity. I never knew if my mother would return home after the procedure due to complications. The surgery ended up being successful after a series of follow-ups and since then we have cherished every single moment of time spent with each other.

To this day she says, "Veronica, you are my one and only child and I live this life for you. I fought hard with the strength of God to be here on this earth with you and raise you to be the beautiful woman you are today. I am thankful and blessed."

My mother is the most selfless person I have ever met and I guess you could say I have always been overprotective of her my entire life. Having a close call to losing her really made me truly appreciate every ounce of her being and I live my life to make her proud.

'My Mom'

Katherine - Social Manager

There are so many things I could say about my mom! She taught me how to jump my car in the rain and how to curl my hair. How to laugh at myself and put family first. My memories of growing up are filled with laughter, cooking together, creating projects, and not worrying about making a mess. That’s how you know life is happening! She taught me that I can do anything and everything that I want in life. While my mother and I could not possibly be more different I know that in her I will always have a cheerleader, protector, and safe space.

'My Momma, the Animal Warrior'

Madeline Komic - Creative Director

I have learned almost everything I know from my mother. She is feisty, kind and smart. Our favorite thing to do together is drink wine on the porch and talk about our babies (our animals) while also complaining about random things that don’t really matter. We also do a yearly trip just my mom and I, where we go antiquing. We call it our Antique Roadshow. One of my favorite/stressful memories from one of these trips ties back into our absurd and dangerous love of animals. We were driving down some random road in South Georgia (with little habitation in sight) when we came across two little lab puppies running around the road. The road was desolate, but there were a bunch of huge trucks zooming down it and the puppies were heading for a grim end. We didn’t even consider not stopping, we immediately both just knew we had to help them somehow. There was no other option! We pulled over and were able to coax them out of the dangerous road. They were sweet but stinky, exhausted and desperate for help. We found a phone book at a nearby gas station (this was pre-internet on our cell phones) and were able to contact a rural shelter nearby that could take them in. I’m not sure what ended up happening to them, but at least they had a safe, warm place to sleep, food, water and people who cared for them. Now we like to joke that we are not allowed to be alone together on trips because this situation has happened in some manner almost every time since! She has trained me to be an animal warrior like her and I am so thankful!

If you need a bit of positivity to self start your week, maybe borrow some key points from the Optimist Creed, below.   Some may feel more challenging,  given our current circumstances,  but maybe find some time this week to reflect and embody these traits.

Optimist Creed
To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet
To make all your friends feel the there is something in them
To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true
To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble

Let's keep each other lifted up.

Have a great day!
Michelle - CEO

Hi everyone!  We are changing things up a bit for today, and taking a dive into the world of golf. How many of you have ever swung a golf club? Been out to a course? Played putt-putt? Last week, we interviewed our friend and ambassador, professional golfer Malene Hansen. If you follow our Instagram, chances are you have seen some of her photos. Here is a small glimpse, of what the life of a professional golfer is like!

How long have you been playing golf? And Where did you play in college?

“I played golf for Coastal Carolina University and I have been playing for about 18-years now. I didn’t start competing until I was 13-years old though. “

Did you always know you wanted to play professionally?

“No, not when I first started. When you are new to golf, it’s very challenging. There’s so much that goes into golf, putting, chipping, iron shots and tee shots. I started to consider the thought about becoming a professional when I started competing. Golf is a challenging game, but it’s also a fun game. You have to learn to fall in love with it”

How would you describe your life, as a professional golfer, to the people who are not immersed in the world of golf?

“I get to do what I love. Playing golf is my hobby, and I get to do it every day. What I love about golf, is that you play against your self and the course. When you are playing the course, it creates a situation that isn’t win or lose. You can play your best and still not win a tournament. In golf, you cannot win every tournament- it just doesn’t happen that way. There are positives you can take away from every round, and experiences where you can learn something new.”

How often do you practice? What does your routine look like?

“I treat it like a full time, so I try to dedicate a full 40 hours to it a week of golf combined with working out. The gym is first and each day I focus on a different part of my body (lower body, upper body and full body). Two days a week, I go and play a full round. The other three days, I break my practice up between putting, chipping and hitting balls on the range. I usually play 9-holes on those days too.”

Here is a question your probably tired of being asked, but when is your next tournament?

“As of now, we are scheduled to play, in Atlanta, May 7th-9th, but we will see.”

Has your routine changed at all since the virus has come to the U.S.?

“So far, not really. Courses are still open here with little changes. No one is supposed to touch the flags, the holes have the cups flipped upside down so its easy to grab the ball from it, and rakes have been removed from courses. Everyone gets their own cart, but I prefer to walk anyways. If a course seems really busy, or there are too many people around a green/range, I decide to avoid it or leave early. Just to be safe. I can always come out early the next day.

What’s your favorite belt and buckle combination?

“The Stripes black and white with the black buckle.”

Stay tuned for our next post!

  1. LOCATION: Find a dedicated and comfortable spot to work to avoid distractions. Set ground rules with the people in your space.

  1. SOCIALIZE: Stay socially connected to avoid feelings of isolation.  Call friends and family.  Face time or Video chat to see a friendly face.

  1. ROUTINE: It is important to keep a structured daily routine and stick with it. Set a morning routine.  Keep regular hours.

  1. BREAKS: Schedule breaks.  It is important to get up and walk around every hour.  Consider taking lunch outside – get out and breathe some fresh air.

  1. SUPPLIES: Be sure you have the equipment and supplies you need to continue to get your job done.

  1. COMMUNICATE: Reach out beyond email, use video conferencing to conduct meetings and be sure everyone shows up with intent. In fact, over communicate by keeping your team in the loop on your availability.

  1. LEARN: Take this opportunity to expand your skill set with additional online training courses.

  1. STAY POSITIVE: Don’t underestimate the smile in the hallway; the joke in the lunchroom giving you a spot of joy. While working remotely, it is important to replace this by talking in person, video conferencing.  Be sure you let someone hear you smile when you are talking :)

https://mistylaurel.com/blogs/c4-insider/20-ways-to-spend-your-quarantine-time-from-c4-equestrian 2020-03-30T12:08:00-04:00 2020-09-17T23:29:15-04:00 20 Ways to Spend Your Quarantine Time - from mistylaurel Equestrian Madeline Komic

Written by Emily Cochran, EQ Division Manager, March 30, 2020

First off -- I want to give a shout out to Bethany at My Equestrian Style for posting her 60 Quarantine Tips, and inspiring us to write our own! This is such a great opportunity to turn something causing such uncertainty and negativity, into something that feels to be within our control. And nothing is more in your power than how you use your time and your energy.

Here are 20 ways you can pass your time at home, while practicing Social Distancing.

 1. Clean your tack!

Let’s be real -- it’s likely MOST of our tack could use a deep cleaning. Quarantine or not, show season is just around the corner and it’s important to be sure everything is in tip-tip shape! Bits, bridles, saddles, pads, blankets, you name it -- clean it. Want to know my favorite tack cleaner? Higher Standard Leather Care!

2. Read a new book - or better yet, re-read an old favorite!

Personally, I will always prefer the smell and feel of a paperback book in my hands. If the Kindle or iPad is more your thing, fine! Charge those up and find a quiet and well-lit place to lay low and get lost in whatever story you have chosen.

3. If you have a pet -- clean ‘em up!

Dog or cat, ferret, fish, hedgehog -- it doesn’t matter. Whip out the brush or give their cage/tank a solid cleaning. They’ll love the attention, or at least they’ll pretend to.

4. Go through your clothes, and donate what you don’t wear.

For example, did you know bras have a shelf life..? It’s recommended you replace sports bras every 6-12 months. Maybe you aren’t ready to toss your favorite one, but if it’s starting to look worn (this includes any garments!) throw it out. This includes your favorite socks with holes... It’s time to let them go. While you’re in your closet and drawers, lay out items in good condition you just don’t wear anymore and donate them!

5. Organize your bathroom sink/pantry/etc

This doesn’t sound all that fun, but I promise, the end result is worth it! For you organizing lovers (or wannabes), I highly recommend checking out Horderly and Neat Method on Instagram or Pinterest. Talk about OCD heaven…

6. Take a free class - online!

This might be more for those outside of their school years, but The Great Courses Plus has a FREE trial, and there are thousands of topics to pick from. Downtime is perfect to focus on something you’ve always wanted to learn about!

7. Podcasts

I am a huge Podcast lover -- my commute is an hour each way, so these have been my go-to for some time now. While I might not be in the car during quarantine, I still make time for my favorite shows. You can listen while you shower, while you clean, cook -- you name it, you can make it work. My favorites? NoSleep, Lore, and The MeatEater podcasts. It’s a strange mix, but if you love the outdoors/conservation/hunting, but also ghosts and folklore, give them a try!

8. Toss out those expired items…

You know what I’m talking about.. Those tiny samples from Ipsy you swore you would use. That Jeffree Star eye shadow palette that’s 3 years old.. Makeup and toiletries have a shorter shelf-life than you’d expect, so throw the oldies away!

9. Puzzles!

I love a good puzzle. So much so, that I put together one that I sealed with a puzzle paint and have ready to hang on the wall in a puzzle frame. You might not want to get that fancy, but there really are puzzles that can double as decor once you’re done. Either way -- taking the time to sit and work a puzzle is about as chill as you can get.

10. Dig out that old laptop

Not everyone has an ancient, 5 pound laptop or computer sitting around. But if you do, charge that puppy up and go straight to the photos. This might give you a good laugh (or cringe), but it’s always so nice to rediscover photos you haven’t seen in a while!

11. Photo Albums

If you live with your parents, ask to go through family photos! Or if you have your own, take a moment to look through them again. Recently I had found a tote I hadn’t been in for 3+ years, and inside were MANY photographs from my elementary and middle school years. I found a few of my Gmama who passed away a little over 2 years ago, and let me tell you, while I did tear up, I was so glad I found them! I have them somewhere safer now, to soon be framed.

12. Try new recipes

Now, do go wasting your dooms-day food supply, but eating in is a great time to try recipes you normally don’t make, and cooking with family is always fun. But if you aren’t the cook, you better help clean! My go-to chef when I want to make something simple yet elegant, is Ina Garten. She's the GOAT of cooking, in my opinion.

13. Bring Pinterest Back

No, Pinterest didn’t leave, but you probably outgrew it. I can honestly admit when it first really got popular (I was in college), I used Pinterest religiously as my wind-down activity. Not so much now, but MAN is it fun to search “dream barn” or “dream house”. Can’t build a $2 million Euro style barn? That’s fine, just pin it to your Dream Barn board. It’s basically the same, minus the ungodly monthly loan.

14. Long Hair Don’t Care

I’m going to share some personal information, so be ready. I have very long hair. Nice hair, from what I am told. But I LOATHE how long it takes to wash my hair..What shampoo do I use? A 2 in 1. Yes.. I am that person. But lately, I have been making a point to do a deep condition and WOW the difference it makes! If you want to splurge on some nice shampoo and conditioner, or just a deep conditioner, I highly recommend Dae hair (and she’s a blogger that built her brand from the ground up!). Take the extra time right now to really get your hair deep conditioned, your future self will thank you!

15. Spa day continued

Did you think I was going to stop at hair..? Use your longer mornings or afternoons to take a long and hot bath/shower, and really make a point to treat yourself. Lotion, nail care, then end with your favorite polish!

16. Journaling

Bullet journal, gratitude journal, or a writing challenge. Taking a pen to paper (or your Notes app, I won’t judge you) is truly a refreshing way to bring your thoughts, ideas, and inspirations to life. I recommend searching on Pinterest for any of the above for ideas on how to get started. Most importantly - just get started! Your writing will flow once you put your mind to it.

17. Learn a new Language

Duolingo is a fan favorite for many reasons. And there are SO many languages to choose from, but personally, I’m going to recommend the obvious - SPANISH. It’s practical, and not difficult to pick up on once you really practice!

18. Online Shopping

Now more than ever, is it a great time to support your favorite small businesses (if you can, of course). Most are still up and running their websites, so if you are in the shopping mood, consider spending your money with them! Here are a few of my favorites: Anything on Etsy, Trek Light Blankets, any local tack shop, The Rollin J Boutique, Dae Hair, to name a few!

19. Garden!

Now I am not going to recommend you go out and start a garden now, BUT, for those of us that have plants inside and out, this is a great time to tend to those. Even your tiny succulents need some attention!

20. Last but not least -- a link to many links.

Shout out to our CEO Michelle -- she sent this link out to the mistylaurel team as a way to share ideas and links of things to do while sheltered. Music, literature, and the coolest of all… LIVE virtual tours of places around the world! So you can still explore a new place, from the comfort of your home. Here’s the link!

I hope this list can offer some entertainment -- If we buckle down and stay home, it will be over before we know it. Take care everyone!

Hey guys! These are tough times for us all, but together we will get through it. mistylaurel is doing our part in social distancing and we encourage you to do the same. This is a great time to connect while many of you have extended time at home. We will be sharing content to offer laughs, ideas, and inspiration to help you take advantage of this!

Most importantly, stay safe, stay healthy, stay smart, and stay POSITIVE.
To pass some time at home, I think we can all agree that a good book or show is the way to go! Below, some of the ladies at mistylaurel are sharing their book, movie, and show recommendations for anyone wanting to check out something new. We would love to hear your favorites, too!
